Dormice

The dormouse section was formed in 2013 and has continued to attract members who want to help survey our various sites and possibly work towards a class licence. For a full description of the species and distribution please look at the dormouse page in the mammal atlas which is in the group of rodents.

We currently have 2 regular sites at Thorncombe Wood and Netherbury, but are hopeful of adding three further sites by next season at Puddletown Forest, Chettle and Shillingstone, plus a smaller one at Halstock.

The survey programme usually runs from April to October/November depending upon the weather. For the latest survey dates please check the events page or contact the section by email at – dormice@dorsetmammalgroup.org.uk.

Please note that numbers are restricted due to safety and may be further restricted through Covid regulations. Natural England require anyone handling dormice to wear protective gloves and face masks to prevent infecting the animals.
